Roman Bronze Figurine of Mouse 1st ,2nd Century AD
A cast bronze mouse, shown crouched, with its ears perked up as holding a disk. The animal’s legs are depicted, curved under the body and the tail is curled around the back; 33mm, 15.60 grams. from the collection of European gentleman living in Vienna. Mice are common subjects in Roman art, each depicted with clear attention to detail, suggesting some sympathy from the Romans for the small animals. Classical writers from the Greek period associated them with fertility.
