Byzantine Silver Dove , Circa 6th-8th Century AD
A oval shaped decoration with a positive relief of dove in the centre. Doted decoration in the field and in the borders; 4.02 grams 41mm diameter. From the collection of European gentleman. Dove (Lat. Columba).?In Christian antiquity the dove appears as a symbol and as a Eucharistic vessel. As a Christian symbol it is of very frequent occurrence in ancient ecclesiastical art. (I) As a symbol of the Holy Spirit it appears especially in representations of the baptism of Our Lord (Matt., iii, 16) and of Pentecost.
