Medieval Gold Ring with Jerusalem Cross, 14th-14en Century AD
A solid gold finger ring with oval sectioned band and bezel finished with five crosses completed with niello technique; 4.89 grams, 22.25 mm overall, 19.50 mm max internal diameter. Ex collection of a EU gentleman living in UK; acquired on the UK art market; previously on the European art market before 2000; Very fine condition. A wearable size. FOOTNOTE: The Jerusalem cross (also known as "five-fold Cross", or "cross-and-crosslets") is a heraldic cross and Christian cross variant consisting of a large cross potent surrounded by four smaller Greek crosses, one in each quadrant. Heavily popularized in the crusades, it was used as the emblem and coat of arms of the Kingdom of Jerusalem from the 1280s. It still continues to be used by Anglicans, Episcopalians, and conservative Catholics today.
