Roman Actor's Tragedy Mask Mount, Circa 1st, 2nd Century AD
Appliqué in the shape of a tragedy mask. Hairstyle piled up in two layers over the forehead (onkos), vertically falling curls on each side. Face with open mouth, pointed chin, straight nose and eye sockets finely modelled. An arch on the back so that the mask could be attached to the base at the correct angle. Beautiful dark green patina with reddish brown oxide spots. Cleaned and polished on the front, rough and matte surface . Height 5.8 cm. 44.85 grams, 50mm. From the collection of a European gentleman; acquired in the 1980 on the German art market.
