Roman Gold Wedding Fede Ring , Circa 1st, 2nd Century AD
Solid gold band , formed of to beaded wires, bezel with six beads and collar, housing dark red carnelian intaglio with clasped hand motif; 2.70 grams, 20mm internal diameter, 22.8 overlap size. Approximate USA size 8 3/4 and UK size R 1/2 . Currently in UK private collection. From EU private collection; acquired on the EU art market in the 2000s. FOOTNOTE : The Fede ring, with its iconic design of two clasped hands, dates back to ancient Roman times, where they were known as "mani in Fede" or "hands in faith." These rings were often exchanged as tokens of love, friendship, and betrothal, symbolising the bond between two individuals.
