An iron spear head with a long blade and a tubular socket for mounting on a pole. Iron Age and Roman Burials in Champagne, Oxford, 2006, fig. 56 FOOTNOTE: Although iron required great skill and intense heat to forge, iron became the metal of choice because of its strength and durability for utilitarian tools and weapons. The Celtic people developed superior ways of forging iron and the spread of iron work throughout Europe was largely due to the expansion of Celtic culture. An iron spearhead such as this piece would have been highly valued for its strength and long reach. A deadly weapon that could easily puncture an opponent’s armour!
