ANTON•AVG•IMP•III•COS•DES•III•III•V•R•P•C•, bare head of Mark Antony to right; small P (engraver’s signature) in hair behind ear / M•SILANVS•AVG Q•PRO•COS in two lines. Crawford 542/1; CRI 346; BMCRR East 175; RSC Antonia 71. 3.73g, 18mm, 10h.
Very Fine; areas of corrosion.
The small P on the obverse of this coin represents the only example of an artist engraving his initials on a Roman Republican coin. This fact went unnoticed for centuries, until it was first pointed out in a Santamaria sales catalogue in 1920.
